Lowe Alpine Rucksacks

Lowe Alpine place great emphasis on their back systems. This, after all, is exactly where you will place your rucksack. For example the TFX back system uses a simple, strong, intuitive method to adjust back length. Flip up the lumbar pad, loosen the buckle and adjust the back length by extending or cinching the web until the correct Torso Fit color block appears in the buckle. Just re-fit the lumbar pad and you're good to go. Additionally, Lowe Alpine have produced Women specific packs; recognising that men and women carry loads distributed in different ways.

Lowe Alpine - Gender Specific Backlength Systems

    Lowe Alpine Rucksacks - Details

    Gender Specific Backlength Systems

If you think all that's needed to create a women's pack is to shorten the back and narrow the harness, then clearly you haven't asked women what they want.

While developing their women's only line of packs Lowe Alpine used both scientific research and real-life research and developement to establish the key factors demanded by women to create the perfect backpack. In doing so, they found two key differences that influenced their design direction.

First, men and women carry loads distributed in different ways. Men prefer to carry loads concentrated high on the back, giving a higher center of gravity. Women prefer to carry loads lower on the back. Lowe Alpine women's packs therefore give greater capacity lower in the pack body.

Second, the overwhelming message from Lowe Alpine's research is that women prefer to organise their loads differently. Lowe Alpine's designs respond to this by adding creative pockets and load organisation systems, both internal and external.

(Image Left) - The overall fit of the harness, hip-belt and back systems clearly need to be tuned specifically for the female form. Necks are narrower, the hip / shoulder ratio is different and back lengths are shorter

    Adaptive Fit Adaptive Fit

The AdaptiveFit hip belt will fit a wide variety of hip shapes and will adapt to your unique shape, simply fasten the hip belt and pull the adjustment web firmly and the hip belt will tighten around your hips supporting the load of the pack comfortably.

(Image Far Left) - A typical male hip shape (Image Left) A typical female hip shape. The upper padded portion has moved along the web pulley arrangement to adapt to the different shapes.

    Load Locker Load Locker

After introducing the plastic buckle back in the Sixties, Lowe Alpine have introduced this alloy buckle. Tougher and more secure than ever before this buckle is 18% lighter than a plastic equivalent. One further advantage is their ease of use with winter gloves - the alloy buckle simply hooks and twists into place.

The Load Locker is a closure device for securing pack lids. It is hooked in position quickly and then locked for security.
    Web Catcher Web Catcher

An alloy buckle that is both light and very strong - karabiner grade in fact, the Web Catcher is also very easy to use and highly practical.

The revised Web Catcher quickly and easily secures skis, poles and axes to the pack.

    Construction Construction

Sewing is the method by which Lowe Alpine construct their packs. They rejected methods using welding, gluing or riveted plastic as, ' they are not as strong or durable as sewing'

They specify nylon 3-ply bonded sewing thread. This is rot resistant, strong and long-lasting. All major seams are sewn twice, then capped with a binding tape for protection and sewn once more.
    Reinforcement Reinforcement

Lowe Alpine reinforce their products in areas of high stress. Key points are reinforced with back tacks ( 5 lines of sewing ), Z tacks ( a double back tack ) or bar tacks as appropriate. Larger capacity packs have a double layer of fabric in their bases.

    The ultimate in bags

Formerly the domain of mountaineers and intrepid adventurers only, rucksacks are something of a phenomenon of recent years. From the middle aged day tripper to the college student, everyone seems to own this epitome of mobile convenience, ranging vastly in colour, size and purpose utilised. Sometimes known as knapsacks and daysacks and a host of other names in between, everyone seems to own one. The reason for this upsurge is generally undocumented but the obvious reason for this increased ownership probably boils down to one thing – convenience. If you have ever struggled carrying a heavy conventional bag over any type of distance and also tried the same cargo with a backpack style bag you will know exactly why they are so popular.

    Sizes and styles

The choice of rucksacks in all their shapes and forms is almost endless. They start from the very small, perhaps in novelty colours with novelty motifs and are utilised by small children, parent also favour this bag because due to the bags mounting on the actual carrier and after the initial period in putting the bag on, the child can barely feel themselves carry it. The next step up is probably the laptop carrying variety, favoured by students and business people alike, they make carrying a reasonably heavy piece of equipment seem almost effortless. Perhaps slightly bigger or slightly smaller than the laptop version, is the daysack, utilised by almost anyone for anything. The bigger versions are also very useful and are generally used from anything from 2 weeks in Spain to a Himalayan trek.

How to pick the correct model for your needs

As previously mentioned, rucksacks come in a multitude of styles, sizes and colours; there is literally something for everyone, from the smallest to the biggest person, from the youngest to the oldest. The first consideration is to decide the main reason for the purchase, it would be impractical to buy a laptop style carrier as your main holiday holdall and on the other end of the spectrum it would be pure folly to buy a massive bag for normal day to day to day use. The simple straightforward way of picking the best bag for you is to ascertain what it is predominantly going to be used for and selecting a size accordingly, many people now own more than one and utilise them accordingly.

    How much should I pay?

Like the varying size and colours available, rucksacks also vary in price; the price depends on a number of different factors. The obvious reason for a difference in price between certain bags would at first glance probably be the size, this is generally true as you would think but another factor that affects the pricing is the manufacturer. The quality varies from bag to bag; you can source certain bags from the market or department stores at very favourable prices, but the age old saying is particularly relevant in this scenario, ‘you get what you pay for’. Many a traveller has got into difficulties due to substandard equipment; it really does pay to pay a little more.

Choosing the correct supplier for the correct bag

Like choosing the right style and right manufacturer for your rucksacks, picking the right supplier is also very important. The correct specialist can give advice and help you select the right product at the right price for your needs. Suppliers such as Penrose Outdoors have years of experience in supplying products of this nature and can provide informed, impartial advice to ensure you get exactly what you are looking for. To conclude, daysack style bags of varying sizes and styles are very popular, not because they are particularly trendy or fashionable, but because they are extremely convenient and easy to use, try for yourself, come to Penrose Outdoors.
